The Mods Mayday Revival has finally arrived!

For the first time ever, one of the most seminal 80’s Mod Pop Band ‘The Chords’ has graced our fine shore’s, and I hope that their loving every fine minute of this amazing tour.  When asked, “How on earth did you manage to get ‘The Chords’ down here to sunny Australia”?  The question came with the reply, “Well when considering the Mod’s Mayday Tour, over a few drinks, it was mentioned that ‘The Chords’ would fit the suit perfectly, so let’s ask!”

And many would agree that after 30 years in the waiting, we have been truly blessed.

Graciously joined by their outstanding support acts Division 4 and Hurricane Fighter Plane, their show beginning this weekend at Notes in Newtown Sydney has certainly commenced with great excitement and enthusiasm from everyone.

Lovers of the Mod era gained much attention out on the streets as they arrived in their dresses and suits much inspired by the love of a time never forgotten, and only ever continued on in the hearts and souls of many who grew up listening to the likes of ‘The Chords’, ‘The Who’ and many others.

Hurricane Fighter Plane were first to set the stage and put on a ground breaking performance, with all the energy and fervency that you would expect from such a young and extremely talented Mod inspired band, their lyrics, vocals and spine tingling guitar solos, had the audience dancing in wonderment of their supreme knowledge and love for the Mod Generation. This band is sure to go a long way in their career as supreme musicians.

With the mood of the evening well into full swing, Division 4 a Sydney based Mod band, are certainly well established in their music career, excreting a true passion and comfort for playing their much loved genre. Their classic sound, and well, crafted stories are in a league of their own, their musicianship and companionship on stage is inspirational, and definitely a performance to be remembered.

Finally The Chords take the stage like lions, the atmosphere is electric, were already in for a fantastic evening. With a set list that includes all of their finest tracks such as ‘Now It’s Gone and ‘So Far Away’, the audience is completely satisfied that the wait to see ‘The Chords’ up close and in the flesh has been well worth it.

We can only hope that we have the chance to see more of The Chords playing worldwide and especially in our hometowns.

Anyone who’s everyone should absolutely take the opportunity to enjoy a Mod Music Evening, find an outfit, and pull out those old dance moves that are so reminiscent of the 60’s and 70’s.

The tour has begun this weekend 4^th May 2012 and is continuing through to Melbourne, until the 12^th May, so check out your local gig guide for more info.

PSEUDO ECHO

The energy in the room is exuberating, waiting for the band to step on stage. Intense with a strong sense of anticipation, the room fills slowly with crowds of the young and older. Fans of forevermore willing to get out of their pajamas’, put down their television controllers, and splice out to some fantastic juice filled Australian Rock and Roll at its finest.

With of course original band members Brian and Pierre we were joined tonight with the most successful of the band’s line up, James Leigh on a smashing bright red electric synthesizer, and brother Vince delighting us with the electric/percussive drum beats that make Pseudo Echo so well renowned.

We don’t need a big stage to see these guys play, in fact it is all the better that we don’t, their rapport with the crowd is soulful, made even more so by the announcement that we are in fact enjoying what is their 30^th Anniversary Celebration! And the set list is well adjusted to assume so. Included are the all remembered and loved tracks from their first album released in June 1984 ‘Autumnal Park’, we listen and sing aloud gracefully to the likes of ‘ A Beat For You’, ‘Stranger In Me’, ‘Dancing Until Midnight’ and the much loved ‘Listening’. Speaking of their finest memories, their ‘Love and Adventure’ album where they used orchestral instruments, including the trumpet, and their first ever gigs here in Sydney. In the background all I can hear is the chanting for the well – awaited ‘Funky Town’.

Each song builds up within itself and beautifully leads into the next; the music has a very unique way of telling its own story, even before Brian begins to sing. Their rock is raw with the classic electro beat, tapping itself on every blood vessel of our bodies.

We were all in what seemed to be one big family gathered here tonight, together sharing the beauty in what we all love to experience ‘the old days’.  I’m in an 80’s dream, we all are, and I’m sure part of us still wishes we were still, how it feels to experience a part of our youth again, the posters on the wall, recognizing that without the flash clothes and the blow-wave hairstyles of Pseudo Echo’s yesteryear, we had a chance to graze on the oh so devilishly handsome group that we adore so much.

The night is closing to an end, and with a short pause from the band comes the hit ‘Funky Town’, the dance floor is pounding, our hearts racing. The stage fills with a lesion of adoring females, at Brian’s request; it was definitely a fun and memorable time had by all.

I’m sure we all feel completely blessed that such an Iconic Australian Band, are still on the ground rocking, and showing the artists of today just how fantastic it is to keep going. And to you Brian ‘Keep Writing!’

Sarah McLeod

Sarah McLeod formally known as the voice  of Australian rock band The Superjesus is currently out and about, and doing a bang up job of promoting more of her recent writings on her Live and Acoustic CD. With some fantastic songs, including He Doesn’t Love You, All But Gone and her own rendition of ACDC’s all time track; You Shook Me All Night Long,  a song perfect to take the album out.

With the lights dimmed low, her sheer evanescence has every member of her audience respectfully quiet and still throughout the entire performance. The humorous banter that continues throughout the night only adds to the enjoyment of seeing such a magnetic artist up close and personal. Sarah is the ultimate musical love affair that you find very hard to walk away from, let alone forget even days after her performance.

Setting the stage with her acoustic and the very talented percussionist Mick Skelton, with whom she co-wrote the songs to the album, her emphatic desire to deliver each song with raw passion gives the lyrics that much boost. Her songs tell the story of the rude awakening to reality…to love, and to the events in life that most choose to ignore, she delivers with fervency what is truly desired by each artist… that the listener finds their own unique way to relate to the message.

Sarah exudes an intimacy that is hard to find in other artists, and she pulls it off with charm and ease. She is one you can never get enough of. I’m looking forward to seeing her again very soon.

Angel Awake

This 3 piece band contains all the elements; they slide between acoustic, heavy rock and bass. Their well crafted songs reflect a naughty raw energy that is the backbone of every horny human being alive, whose soul lay inside of love, loss and emotional poverty. These songs exude lust with serenity, and undoubtedly their strong bass improvisations drives the message home perfectly.

Angel Awake’s embracively adorable lead singer has a voice that is deep, delightful and swings between the sounds of Suze DeMarchi and Melissa Etheridge, and blends exceptionally well with the strong acoustics and backup vocals. These guys are perfect, they can go anywhere with their sounds, roll between love, heavy metal and fantasy and stay well established between both!
